Mortis Street Cemetery c1839 – c1930’s
Old Goulburn General Cemetery
Mortis Street Cemetery (Old General Cemetery) at 1 Mortis Street or 4 Cemetery Street was the first general cemetery and second cemetery of Goulburn. It is divided into sections for Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and Wesleyan/Methodist adherents. The oldest remaining monument is from 1839 for Alexander Fraser aged 50. This cemetery was dedicated in 1843. The new St Patrick’s or Kenmore Catholic Cemetery on Middle Arm Road was opened about 1888 and the General Cemetery in Gorman Road was dedicated in 1902. Mortis Street remained in general use until it was closed in 1903 but burials continued in family plots until 1947. In October 1967 Goulburn Council became the Trustees of this cemetery. The mural on the corrugated iron wall of the former Kermac Engineering Building was painted in 2000 by Fran Ifould from Braidwood Arts and is a distinctive landmark.
